The vagus nerve doesn’t get damaged, but clients can get stuck in various phases of the threat response cycle which can prevent access to rest and digest/ventral vagal state, and some blended states (dorsal/ventral blend and ventral/sympathetic blend specifically). A thorough understanding of this (that’s taught in many modalities) is the best bet, as it’s not just about “fixing” vagus but titrating release, discharging sympathetic energy, restoring orienting capabilities, and learning how to come into (either back into or for the first time ever) a ventral state. Some modalities spend hundreds of hours teaching this, and just giving exercises without that context can be really destabilizing. Here are some great sites for helping you with healing trauma through somatic practices.
