Motherless Daughters Retreat

This is the retreat you’ve heard so much about: Our flagship three-night, four-day gathering for women who were children and teenagers at the time of loss (up to and including age 21). Spend the weekend sharing stories and doing customized activities with 13 other women who understand where you’re coming from — and who will become a support system for wherever you’re going!

At a private, spacious venue in beautiful Topanga Canyon, California, we'll:

  • explore the enduring impact of a mother's death and absence;
  • examine the messages, beliefs, and coping strategies we've carried forward;
  • offer and receive support in a circle of women who understand; and
  • welcome our mothers into our present-day lives.

We'll address issues specific to your unique group of women, which may include the fear of dying young, navigating our adult relationships, and feeling "stuck" at the age we were when our mothers died. We’ll start re-framing and rewriting our life stories into ones that are more sustaining and relevant to this point in our lives.

Hope Edelman, certified coach and author of Motherless Daughters, and a guest co-facilitator will co-lead this retreat.

First and foremost, we are being as Covid-cautious as possible.

When life gives you a world-wide pandemic, we choose safety…and an intimate retreat with plenty of time and space for all!

The retreat will be held in a private home, with ample outdoor space for meeting and retreating.

We are also lowering the maximum number of retreat participants from the usual 26 to just 14 total, plus your two facilitators.

So we require all attendees to show proof of vaccination. We must be firm about this and cannot debate these requirements.

(Please note: We know restrictions are hard. We don’t like them either. If you find yourself unable to come because of vaccination status, please know we will consider a virtual Early Loss retreat for 2022 if there’s enough interest. Add yourself to that list by clicking HERE.)

20-SOMETHINGS LOSS RETREAT IN PERSON March 31-April 3, 2022

A 3-night/4-day retreat for women who lost their mothers at age 21 or older

With Hope Edelman in Topanga, CA and Co-Facilitated by Angela Schellenberg

March 31 - April 3, 2022

This is the retreat you’ve heard so much about: a three-night, four-day gathering specifically designed for women who were in their 20s when their mothers died. (You can be any age now!)

We created this special retreat because losing a mother in one’s 20s is a very different experience than it is in childhood or the teen years.

No matter what age you are now, spend the weekend sharing stories and doing customized activities with 12 other women who understand where you’re coming from — and who will become a support system for you wherever you’re going!

At a private, spacious venue in beautiful Topanga Canyon, California, you'll:

  • explore how the tasks of early adulthood can be affected by the tasks of mourning (and vice versa);
  • examine the messages, beliefs, and coping strategies you developed and carried forward;
  • offer and receive support in a circle of women who understand; and
  • find ways to stay connected to your mom.

The developmental tasks of young adulthood often position a daughter with one foot still in the family of origin and one foot in autonomy. It’s a decade when the relationship with the mother is likely to change, too.

We might feel that just when we started getting to know her as a woman, our time together came to an end.

The weekend is led by Hope Edelman, certified coach and author of Motherless Daughters, along with angela schellenberg a licensed trauma, Grief and loss counselor.

Together, they will support you wherever you are in your grief process. Full-group discussions, small-group exercises, guided meditations and journaling will all be part of the retreat with the goal for you to:

  • create a new, inner relationship with your mom and repair any disruptions;
  • identify the messages, beliefs, and coping strategies you've carried forward the loss;
  • express your innermost thoughts and concerns in a safe and non-judgmental space; and
  • offer and receive support in a circle of women who understand.

First and foremost, we are being as Covid-cautious as possible.

When life gives you a world-wide pandemic, we choose safety…and an intimate retreat with plenty of time and space for all!

The retreat will be held in a private home, with ample outdoor space for meeting and retreating. As much of the event as possible will be held outside (weather permitting), and each attendee will be provided with a cozy blanket that is marked with her name for the entirety of the retreat — just in case it's chilly! We have limited the number of people entering the space during the weekend, and added additional cleaning services and protocols. A specialized air filter will be running inside the entire time, and there are hand washing and sanitizing stations throughout the space.

We are also lowering the maximum number of retreat participants from the usual 26 to just 12 total, plus two facilitators. We require all attendees to show proof of vaccination AND boosters, if more than 6 months has passed since the second vaccination. We also strongly suggest all attendees take a rapid Covid-19 test the night prior to the retreat and email us proof of their negative results before arrival. We must be firm about this and cannot debate these requirements.

(Please note: We know restrictions are hard. We don’t like them either. If you find yourself unable to come because of vaccination status, please take a look at the virtual options here. And if you’re worried about the retreat being canceled because of a surge, please read the cancellation policy at the bottom of this page.)
